What basement glass block does well
- Security: a mortared glass block panel has no latch to pry and is much tougher than thin old glass.
- Privacy: patterned block blurs the view into a basement while still letting in daylight.
- Drafts and water: a properly sealed panel replaces gaps around worn sashes and frames.
- Low upkeep: no wood to paint and no moving parts to wear out.
When a basement window should not be glass block
Glass block is fixed. It is not an emergency escape opening. If a basement room is used, or will be used, as a bedroom, building codes generally require an egress window that a person can climb out of. Talk to the contractor and your local building office before putting glass block in any window that may need to serve as an exit. See basement glass block vs. regular windows.
Vents, dryers and airflow
Many basement panels include a small hinged air vent or a dryer vent opening built into the block. If your dryer currently vents out a basement window, or you want some fresh air in a laundry area, say so in your notes so the estimate covers it.
